Getting started

When you first start out in the world of make-up artistry you will inevitably be prepared to take any work that comes your way provided you are qualified to undertake the work. Until you have built your portfolio you will have no way of showing prospective clients your work.

A good way to start earning a living while building your portfolio is through bridal work. This can be achieved by contacting your local hair salons and offering your make-up services to the stylists while they are dressing the bride’s hair.

Most make-up artists specialise in either fashion and advertising or film and special effects. The difference between them is as if they are two separate industries.

Fashion and advertising usually involves a maximum of one or two days at a time working in a photographic studio or for a catwalk show. The job may last up to a full working week if it’s on location.

With film and special effects work a make-up artist may be employed for a few months at a time both in the film studio and on location.

Although both art forms are rewarding in their own way they do require differing skills.

Fashion make-up would not necessarily require you to have an art degree; however a good eye for colour, detail and trends is important.

Film work and special effects would usually indicate that you have a strong artistic inclination. You would also require knowledge of historical costume and wigs.
