Balayage is back
Balayage is back Balayaged locks are making a comeback thanks to likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexa Chung and Jennifer Aniston.

Clare Lodge, professional hair stylist and head colourist at Paul Edmonds, told Elle magazine that celebrities favour the technique because it leaves the hair looking polished, but still naturally coloured.

"There are less roots and it's not uniformed so you don't get that line that you do with 'normal' highlighting, instead you get a soft level of lightening through the ends for a low-maintenance look," she told the magazine.

The technique is French and its name comes from the word "balay", meaning to sweep, as this is how the colour is applied, Elle explained.

Professional hair stylists use a freehand method, not involving foils.

Another technique which is being favoured by celebrities and the general public at the moment is "interlacing", which involves plaiting the hair and then painting a colour lighter than the natural shade on the surface of the braid.
