This season's trend is for minimalist and imperfect beauty styles according to one expert.
In an interview with the New York Times, director of makeup artistry for MAC Cosmetics Terry Barber explained how the preened look "got slightly boring".
Instead, 2012 is set to be about achieving "coming home from the party" and not "going out to the party" style.
This includes smudged eyeliner, tousled hair, luminous skin and dewy lips, rather than a defined pout, overdone eyes and matte skin teamed with structured locks.
Mr Barber also claimed smoky eyes have fallen out of favour, with brown mascara and eye pencil the best way to achieve a fresh look.
Meanwhile, metallic or wet eyelids were noted as a great way to channel "modern pared-down glam rock".
Kate Moss is one celebrity who often channels a relaxed look, with the star famous for her loose bed-head hairstyle and low-key makeup.
