This season's party trend is said to be all about layering on the makeup for a "rock 'n' roll holiday look".
According to makeup artist James Kaliardos, festive beauty should be about glamour without the glitz, the New York Times reports.
He commented that it is possible to look stylish and fun without being "glitter-crazed", by teaming strong eyes and lips with almost bare skin.
Mr Kaliardos suggested channelling Debbie Harry and Jodie Foster, with grey and blue shades applied to the eyelid and lower lash line.
"Really feel your shape and bones so you get subtle contour and an emphasis on the crease of the lid," the expert advised.
To complete the look, Mr Kaliardos recommended curling lashes and adding red lipstick.
Makeup artist Jules Cardozo-Marsh recently explained how autumn/winter fashions are all about "over-the-top" glamour, with jewel tones a key trend.
This was noted as a fun way to achieve a modern take on the smoky eye.
